Research and Documentation

AECOM’s architectural historians and historians have extensive experience conducting research and documentation projects, involving nominations for the National Register of Historic Places, HABS/HAER recordation, and public-outreach efforts.

National Register Nominations

Established in 1966 as part of the National Historic Preservation Act, the National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation and is an important tool for assisting in the long-term preservation of historic architectural resources. Our professionals are experts in background research and the analysis required to assess the significance of a property and determine if it possesses the physical integrity to be considered eligible for the National Register. AECOM’s staff has successfully shepherded nominations through the full listing process, which typically includes intensive background research, field investigations, critical analysis, and working with state historic preservation offices to prepare nominations for review at the state and national levels.

HABS/HAER

Our architectural historians and historians have had the opportunity to work on Level I, II, and III HABS/HAER projects for submission to various state historic preservation offices and to the National Park Service. These projects usually include a combination of measured drawings, digital and/or large-format photography, recordation of historic features, primary and secondary research, and preparation of a technical report. Our projects have included documentation of such resources as residences, post offices, industrial buildings, electrical generating stations, and lighthouses.

Public Education and Outreach

As stewards of history and architecture, AECOM understands the importance of educating the public on our cultural history and working with communities to recognize their cherished places. AECOM offers a wide array of interpretive services and products to help our clients meet this goal. Our professionals have completed many public education and outreach projects involving interpretive signage, historic markers, educational brochures, and interactive websites. We have a team of architectural historians and historians that are skilled in archival research and technical writing, and a team of graphic design professionals adept at producing professional and effective displays.
